The Dog That Chose Me

I’ve always had a soft spot for animals, but Chance was the one who made me realize just how deep that love ran.

I met him when he was five. He wasn’t a stray, he wasn’t a rescue—at least, not in the way you typically think. He had a home, he had a person. He belonged to my boyfriend (now husband). But from the moment we met, there was something unspoken between us, an immediate understanding.

And then came the night I knew, without a doubt, that he had chosen me.

I was leaving Cory’s house, walking down his long driveway, when Chance did something he had never done for anyone before. He chased after me. Not in a frantic, playful way—he ran with purpose. He didn’t want me to go. He wanted to be with me.

That moment changed everything.

From then on, Chance wasn’t just Cory’s dog. He was mine, too. He was my shadow, my best boy, my steady comfort. No matter what else was happening in life, I knew he’d always be there, waiting for me, excited to see me, choosing me—every single day.

Chance had a kindness to him that was rare. He was protective, but never aggressive. A lover, not a fighter. He wanted nothing more than to be close, to rest his head on your lap, to press his body against yours just to remind you he was there. He was so smart—not just in the way he learned commands or understood routines, but in the way he understood me. He knew when I was happy, and he celebrated with me. He knew when I was hurting, and he stayed closer. He didn’t just love me—he cared about me.

And through him, I started seeing animals differently. I started realizing that they aren’t just pets—they’re souls. They have their own wants, their own ways of loving, their own ways of finding their person.

Chance’s love was simple but profound. And when I lost him, the hole he left was impossible to fill. But even in his absence, he’s still shaping me.

Because of him, I know that animals will always be part of my life. Because of him, I know that I want to do more—I want to help tell the stories of other animals waiting for their own moment of connection. Their own person. Their own Chance.

He wasn’t a rescue, but in so many ways, he rescued me.

And that’s something I’ll carry with me forever.
